How do you solve a problem like Ulster?

I regularly drive underneath the flightpath to George Best City Airport, I look up at the planes taking off with longing; “I wish I could be onboard, and go wherever you’re going to.” Admittedly there isn’t a plethora of choices these days, but I dream of the tropical islands I could jet to, I dream of not returning. It’s this city. It’s this city that I am grown from and grown sick of. Barely any time passes without some new unoriginal excuse for yet another social schism. it seems that occasionally, this yearning to be different from them is the only thing that really binds us all as a community. Except there is more, so much more. On any given day theoretical sworn enemies shop side by side for the latest fashions in the centre of our city; de facto members of various “angry acronym organisations” stand just a concrete island away from a supposed nemesis on petrol forecourts across the province, filling their vehicles with unleaded with not a moments thought to the alternative use (although at +£1.35p/litre, who would waste a drop??) Someone wise once said “public transport is societies great equaliser” I suggest our society equaliser is in fact the cramped aisles of Primark & TK Maxx, forming an orderly queue at the checkout. It is this dichotomy that troubles me of us most. Is it the identity we cling to? The need to belong to something and in the absence of alternatives, resigning ourselves to a hobby of hate? Some Los Angeles gangs are famed for blood in, blood out, are we: Nothing better to...

I’m sure there will be people that know who Belfast Barman(ager) is, I only ask that I remain anonymous in public. I believe that there are some in power who frown upon people in the alcohol business raising their heads above the parapet and telling it like it is.   Also, I occasionally rant about bloody everything. Comment if you feel like it, I love engaging with people over sometimes divisive topics…its how society progresses. Currently ranting about: Easter Licensing Laws I’m available for comment on any hospitality related issue. Except bed & breakfasts….I have absolutely no relevant knowledge about amateur...
